The Eighty-Sixers Topper Award
 
Introduction:

The alumni from Government College of Engineering, Salem 1982-86 batch (referred to as the Eighty-Sixers henceforth) would like to introduce The Eighty-Sixers Topper Awards to the current students of our college . The Eighty-Sixers take great pride in establishing this award system for the first time in our college to honor deserving meritorious students. We hope that this will be the first of many such awards from the alumni of our college

Specific Award names:
- The Eighty-Sixers Topper Award for Civil Engg.
- The Eighty-Sixers Topper Award for EEE.
- The Eighty-Sixers Topper Award for ECE.

- The Eighty-Sixers Topper Award for Mechanical Engg.

- The Eighty-Sixers Topper Award for Metellurgical Engg.

Objectives:

Structure of the award:
The Eighty-Sixer Topper Awards are designed to honor the top student of each department every year. That means there will be only one award of this kind for the entire department in one year. Each of these awards carries cash value of Rs.2000, as of Jan 31 2005, a certificate and an award medal All students belonging to a department qualify for this award.

Criteria:
This award is designed to make the efforts popular among all the department students, not among a particular batch. The following are the criteria that should be satisfied by the award winner:
  • The total in both the previous two semesters (odd and even) must not be less than any other students in the same batch.
  • The percentage of the toppers of the different batches should be compared and the award winner must have scored the maximum percentage among these toppers.
Guidelines and awarding procedure:
  • The awards should be presented on alumni association day every year.
  • In case if the alumni association day is not conducted on a particular year, the awards should be presented on the first working day of the fourth working week after the grades have been received from the university.
  • The Heads of the department should present the awards
  • If the award winner is not present, it should be held with the class advisor and presented to the student at a convenient time
  • The awards will be presented always as a check
  • If more than one person are eligible for the awards, the amount should be split among the winners equally (checks will be generated accordingly) and the certificates and the medal would be replicated.
  • Each of the medals should be inscribed with the name of the award, student and the year.
  • The HOD of the respective departments and the principal will be formally requested to inform the batch coordinator about the winners not later than the first Monday of July month.
  • Copies of the form will be provided to the HODs and principal.
  • The award winners have to be decided before the last Monday of July every year.
  • The above deadlines are designed so that presenting the award during alumni association meeting is possible. If there are administrative delays, then the award winners have to be decided before the first working day of the second working week after the grades have been received from the university.
  • The percentage has to be calculated as below:
    • § Total marks (including labs) in a semester/No of Subjects (including labs) to two decimal digits.

Assume the following students are in EEE
Second year : A2, B2 and C2
Third Year: A3, B3 and C3
Fourth Year : A4, B4 and C4

Recently Passed out AF, BF and CF

Typically A2, B2 and C2 would have completed first year and will be in the 3rd sem., A3, B3 and C3 in 5th sem.and A4, B4 and C4 7th sem.during the ceremony
